Winona Ryder professional Winona Ryder was born in Winona Minnesota. Her parents named their daughter after her hometown. Michel Horowitz was her father as well as Cynthia Palmer, his mother are both authors and editors. Ryder's dad was born into a Jewish family. Ryder considers her self Jewish. The actress is the younger sister of Uria and also has half-siblings Jubal & Sunyata. Ryder's family moved from Mendocino County in California in the year she turned seven young. The family didn't have electricity. Ryder was a voracious bookworm and spent most of her time reading books as she didn't have a TV. Ryder, then 12, took up a place at the American Conservatory Theatre for acting classes in the year 1983. At the age of 15, Ryder was cast in Lucas her first big film. Ryder was bullied in high school. She hoped that her career in acting would alter her life. However, unfortunately, it did not work out. It was a dream she pursued. In 1988 she had her breakthrough role in Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. Ryder had a successful role in many films. She was nominated for two Academy Awards one for her performance as a character in The Age of Innocence (1993).
